Tips for Kids Moving with Parents

  • Tell your parents how you feel. It's OK to feel scared and sad at first. Talk to your parents.
  • Find out as much as you can about your new home.
  • Make a list of the things that are most important to you like swim team, ballet lessons, etc. and get information on them at your new home.
  • Try to visit your new school before you enroll. Get a handbook or yearbook to see what clubs and activities are available and what the kids are wearing.
  • At your new school, remember to smile and say hello. Ask kids you'd like to get to know questions about classes and school.
  • Ask your teacher or counselor about other new students and get to know them.
  • Get involved with school activities. It's a good way to meet new friends.
  • After the move keep in touch with your old friends. Send photos of your new home and school. Invite them for a visit to your new home.
  • Get settled in your room at your new home as soon as possible. Think about all the exciting new things you can do in your new home.
  • Plan an outing with your family or new friends to a fun, new place.
  • Give yourself time to adjust and don't be too hard on yourself or your parents.
